Burns Supper: A Celebration of Scotland's National Bard

Every year, on the 25th of  January, people across the world come together to celebrate the life and works of one of Scotland’s most beloved poets, Robert Burns. The Burns Supper, a festive event full of poetry, music, food, and drink, is a cherished tradition. It’s a time to honour the man who gave us timeless verses like Auld Lang Syne and Address to a Haggis, among many others.

Burns Supper: A Celebration of Scotland's National Bard

The Origins of Burns Supper

The first Burns Supper was held in 1801, five years after Burns’ death. A group of his friends gathered to pay tribute to the poet, and the event was such a success that it became an annual tradition. Over the years, the supper has grown into a global celebration of Scotland’s culture, with Burns enthusiasts from all corners of the world joining in!

A Taste of Scotland

The heart of any Burns Supper is the food, and it is steeped in tradition. The most iconic dish is haggis, a savoury pudding made of sheep’s organs, oatmeal, onions, and spices. While it may sound unusual to some… it is beloved in Scotland and forms the centrepiece of the meal. Traditionally, the haggis is brought into the room with great ceremony, often accompanied by the skirl of bagpipes. The meal is washed down with plenty of Scotch whisky, which is an integral part of the celebration!
